Somewhere, I have a piece on the reason for the demise of the local bar......

Direct Deposit.

Back in the old days, bar owners used to cash checks for change. I used to go sit with a guy who, with .45 on his hip, would sit in his bar with a wad of cash as big as a cabbage as the 7:00 a.m. shift got out and if the check was $100.35, he would cash the check and keep the 35c. And of course, the guy would then sit at the bar and drink. He never got robbed and made a ton of cash.

When Direct Deposit started gaining popularity, he and I would kill a bottle of bourbon throughout the day discussing if it was a conspiracy of banks and wives.
