… lot of older liberals, it’s taken a tremendous amount of work and many years just to get this far. When I was born, a woman couldn’t have a credit card in her name, and Black people had only just recently technically secured the right to vote. You could be thrown in jail for being gay, and abortion was illegal. Most of our civil rights, including freedom of speech and freedom of the press, were established during this time. I’m only fifty-five. This isn’t ancient history.
